• River supply is with water for drinking and watering plants.

• The lands near the water were fertile and easy to plough.

2) What are the characteristics of the Indus Valley Civilisation?
• Government. The government is well-planned and has a system of efficient government.
• Different Occupations. The people work as farmers, craftsmen and priests.
• Writing. It shows that Indus Civilisation has a writing system. The stone seals were used as a form of personal identification.
3) What are the public places found in Indus Valley?
• Drainage system. It is underground.
• Citadel. It is a large fort where people can take shelter if enemy attacked the city.
• Granary. It used to store grains.
• The Great Bath. It is a large public bath used for religious purposes.
4) List the reasons for the decline of the Indus Valley Civilisation.
• Floods would have destroyed the irrigation system that the people depended on for farming.
• Floods bred mosquitoes which led to the outbreak of malaria.
• There were invasions of the Indus Valley Civilisation by the Aryans.
5) What are the characteristics of the Shang Civilisation?
• Government. The Shang Civilisation was ruled by the kings that came from the same family line and thus a dynasty was formed. The kinds lived in a capital city and ruled the surrounding villages and smaller areas.
• Different Occupations. The Shang people were mostly farmers, traders, craftsmen and priests. The craftsmen made intricate bronze objects such as weapons, wine cups and jars. They also made beautiful silk clothes and jade ornaments for the king and their family.
• Writing. Pictographic writing and their characters were called pictograms.
6) How are oracle bones useful to us?
• Oracle bones were used by priests to tell the future.
• Such bones were usually the shoulder of sheep and cows.
• The bones were also used to record names of rulers, family histories and events such as the eclipses of the sun and moon.
7) List the reasons that gave rise to the maritime kingdom in Southeast Asia.
• Rice. People of Southeast Asia were the first to grow rice. Rice is a source of food.
• Trade. Villages on the coast acted as a port. Due to maritime trade, sea trade, coastal villages developed into port cities.
8) What are the characteristics of Early Southeast Asia Civilisation?
• Government. Southeast Asia was ruled by kinds. Religion was important and every Southeast Asian port city had a religion building. Other buildings were made from wood.
• Different Occupation. People in the port cities did different kinds of jobs. There were people who built and repaired ships, officials who were primarily responsible on bringing in takes and protecting foreign traders.
• Writing. Records were initially written in Sanskrit but began to develop their own single script that was known as Jawi script.
9) Explain the government of Ancient India.
• Inner Circle, Capital City. The king’s palace was located here and he was the most powerful man. He was surrounded by nobles and officials. The ministers were educated priests that advise the king on how to rule.
• Second Circle, Inner Provinces. The provinces were the lands of kings of had been defeated during wars. Each province, a governor reported directly to the king and watched over many officials.
• Third Circle, outer Provinces. The king’s power was weaker and his governors share power with local kings. Local kings gave some taxes they collected to him and kept strong armies in these provinces to watch over the local kings.
• Fourth Circle, Border Zones. The king’s power was the weakest. People living in these areas had a choice of which king they wanted to show their loyalty to.
10) Describe briefly the system of feudalism in ancient China.
• The king allowed feudal shi to rule his lands.
• Feudal shi allowed farmers to farm and protect them.
• Farmers worked as a feudal shi.
• Feudal shi gave tribute to the king.
11) Describe the unitary government system under Qin Shihuang.
• His empire was divided into 36 provinces.
• Each province was under his direct control.
• Each province had a military government, a civilian governor and an inspector.
• All officials reported directly to Qin Shihuang.
12) Discuss about the civil service in ancient China and the contribution of Han Wudi towards the civil service
• The civil service of a country consists of the government departments and the people who work in them.
• Before the Han dynasty, the civil service had always consisted of members belonging to rich and powerful family.
• Han Wudi introduced new laws for the recruitment of civil service.
• Men who wanted to be civil servant had to sit for the Imperial Civil Service Examinations.
• Han Wudi set up the first imperial university.
13) Explain the government of Malaka Sultanate.
• Inner Circle, Capital City. Inner Circle was directly ruled by a sultan (king) that was assisted by four ministers. They ensured that law and order was kept.
14) Why Malaka become a great trading port?
• A safe harbour
• Located along the Straits of Malaka
• An ideal centre for the distribution and collection of goods brought from other parts of Southeast Asia.
15) How Parameswara contributed?
• Parameswara formed a friendship with the Chinese emperor to ensure protection from enemy attacts.
• He also appointed syahbandars to look after the needs of foreign traders.
• Parameswara married a Muslim princess from Pasai and converted to Islam. By doing so, Parameswara won the support of rich Indian-Muslim and Arab traders.
16) List the factors necessary for Golden Age to take place.
• People were happy.
• Less starvation/poverty.
• Economy was thriving and prosperous.
• People were satisfied with their government and rulers.
• People did not have to worry about basic things like safety, food or shelter.
